Linux Computer Froze? Raise The Elephants!

If your linux computer froze, what would you do? The last resort that comes in our mind if the system does not respond is to switch off in case of desktops and to take out the battery in case of laptops. But in some cases, the battery does not come out easily and you may have to remove some screws for that, which is time consuming.

Note that, by following any of these options, YOU MAY LOSE ANY UNSAVED DATA. So be careful and use them at your own risk.

=>First of all, try Ctrl+Alt+Backspace. This will restart the X Server.

=>If it does not work, you have to raise the elephants!

This pseudonym is used for a special key combination that you need to press. The complete phrase is:

Raising Skinny Elephants Is Utterly Boring

Press and hold Alt key and Sys Req key on your keyboard. Note that Sys Req is nothing but the Print Screen (Prt Sc) key. Then, while holding these two keys, press these keys one after the other. Remember to pause a little after each key press.

R S E I U B

So, the combination becomes:

Alt+SysReq+R (Puts keyboard in raw mode)
Alt+SysReq+S (Synchronizes the disk)
Alt+SysReq+E (Terminates all processes)
Alt+SysReq+I (Kills all processes)
Alt+SysReq+U (Remounts the file systems as read-only)
Alt+SysReq+B (Reboots the system)

If all goes well, your system will reboot.

Congratulations! You just rescued your computer from a frozen state!

Note: This article is about rescuing from the "hanged" or "frozen" state, i.e. when the system does not respond. If your computer REALLY froze, as in snow or ice, CONTACT YOUR NEAREST COMPUTER EXPERT and take it immediately to a hotter place!! ;) :-P
